WRITE CLUB · EMOTI AWARDS · AUGUST 2026

Five per category.
Winners still to be chosen.

Shortlists for all nine August awards, built from what readers wrote in the 31 session threads. Five nominees each, unranked and listed by session date; the host's own entries always sit fifth.

31Reading sessions
40Story nomination slots
24Distinct readings nominated
5GOAT nominees

These are shortlists, not results. Each award has five nominees, chosen on reader evidence from the August session transcripts. Slots follow session date, except that the host's own entries always take slot 5, so slot order carries no rank.

Several authors appear on more than one list: Hammond (The Faraday Room) on four, and Carl Price, Chris Swallow, David T. Etheredge, Jacob Seinemeier and Randy M on three each. If the finalizers keep to one award per author, settle those names first.

Scope, eligibility, and limitations
  • Every transcript was read in full to log 846 reader-pinned story moments and 346 substantive critiques, each with the readers' exact words and reactions.
  • Each category had its own judge, who saw only that category's rules and evidence, rated all 31 sessions, then chose five different authors or readers.
  • Evidence must point at a specific moment. Independent readers pinning the same moment count most; 💯 and 👆 on a quoting comment count as co-signs.
  • For the reaction categories, a reader's reported laugh, gasp or chill is the evidence. FLEX alone requires readers to say what the line is doing.
  • An author's comments on their own story never count, partners aren't independent readers of each other's work, and shared accounts count once.
  • The host is eligible like any author. His partner's comments on his stories, and his on hers, were treated as context rather than evidence.
  • Every reader quote was checked against its transcript message. Seven card lines also match the published stories; the rest are as readers quoted them.
  • Hammond's closing “comp” line and Randy M's passage about Vanya's fall are each nominated in both OOOF and NOPE.

🤯 WHOA · Mind-Blowing Concept/Idea

A concept, premise, worldbuilding idea or speculative mechanism that readers marveled at as genuinely new. Readers have to name the idea itself; praise for execution alone doesn't count.

SLOT 1 · AUGUST 14 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Jacob Seinemeier

Unhuman Resources- Part 1 of 3

Monsters with day jobs: Perth's folklore creatures staff an ordinary office.

Eleven readers engaged the world of Perth's hidden 'Hider' community, where folklore creatures hold office jobs (tentacled secretary, Domovoi IT, oni HR). Terence Anthony: 'nice to see some new ones'; Logan Raith welcomed skipping 'tired choices'; Carl Price's HR-interview riff drew 💯×5.

I loved that the supernatural creatures Heller encounters are ‘off-brand’ monsters (at least for me). No shade to vampires, werewolves, et al, but nice to see some new ones. And the ways you’ve chosen to portray them are funny and imaginative.

Aug 14 · M105 David T. Etheredge (host): “my favorite - I like having these monsters we are not familiar with from the names …”

Qualification. Familiar-frame flags: the host felt 'fairy tale MIB' (👍×3); Lisa N Snowe likened it to Fables and Men In Black; Logan Raith called the noir-detective concept 'a common enough trope'. Eris Index found the lore chunks slow.

SLOT 2 · AUGUST 16 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Carol Viana

The Lovecule Experiment — A Guided Trip to Mount Olympus Placebo Research Center on Mars

A placebo trip to Mars, aboard a ship readers describe as running on named pain.

Six of eight readers engaged the premise. Joshua Bader: 'I have never read anything like it' (💯×2); Lisa N Snowe: 'a unique, creative approach'. Readers named the pain-powered Space Croissant, the named sentient pain, and the story's placebo effect.

I can.honestly say I have never read anything like it.

Qualification. somuchfor_subtlety disliked it ('doesn’t take it’s framing device seriously'); steffie was unsure 'what's real'; Eris Index wanted absurdity, not explanation, in its dialogue-heavy stretch. Check that the text says the ship runs on pain.

SLOT 3 · AUGUST 27 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Hammond (The Faraday Room)

What Friends Are For

Friendship on a paid tier: teen friendships run like subscriptions, down to hardship plans and comps.

Fourteen readers engaged the idea of friendship sold in subscription tiers, naming its parts (paid tier, hardship plan, comping, 'River lapsed') and riffing on it ('friendscriptions', premium-tier jokes). Co-signs: 💯×43, 👍×36 across 23 comments.

The more that I read it (because I cheat and do multiple passes), the more I was able to pick up on tiny subtleties that lay the groundwork for a world where friendship is now essentially a subscription-based platform.

Aug 27 · M150 ladylazarus2235: “The concept is by far the strongest part of this for me, and the execution is …”

Qualification. Four readers likened it to Black Mirror ('Nosedive', social credit). Bekjon, Eris Index and Joshua Bader found the tier mechanics unclear; B.E. Lunetois called it 'a bit too on-the-nose'. Ending wording differs: 'this week' vs 'the week'.

SLOT 4 · AUGUST 31 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Kevin Hayman

The Errant Apprentice Book 1 - Chapter 1 — The Last Dragon

The last dragon, and a tractor: a red dragon loose in a modern-day Mississippi with knights.

Eleven readers engaged the red dragon mating with a tractor or the modern-Mississippi knight setting. bluesky8_: 'unlike anything I've ever read before coming from a dragon'; Eris Index asked where the idea came from; the host: 'destroying fantasy tropes' (💯×3).

When the dragon was going to town on the tractor. That was unlike anything I've ever read before coming from a dragon LOL

Aug 31 · M130 bluesky8_: “When the dragon was going to town on the tractor. That was unlike anything I've ever …”

Aug 31 · M128 Eris Index: “Question: Where did the idea come from to make a dragon mate with farm equipment?”

Aug 31 · M66 Joshua Bader: “The dragon trying to mate with the tractor was a nice twist, particularly when you tied …”

Aug 31 · M152 David T. Etheredge (host): “Anyway you also do a great job of destroying fantasy tropes.”

Qualification. Much of the response is laughter at a gag and at readers' own riffs. Setting drew Pratchett and 'urban/modern stuff with dragons' comparisons; Logan Raith questioned the world's logic ('How are there any left?').

SLOT 5 · AUGUST 09 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

David T. Etheredge

The Daily Male - Issue 1 — The Greatest Closer in Hell

Air conditioning, sold in Hell: a door-to-door salesman pitches AC to a demon.

Twelve readers praised the premise itself ('The premise for this story is brilliant', 'The premise is killer', 'Where did you come up with this?') and riffed on its logic (sulfur cooling, capitalism in Hell, is Hardwick dead?). Co-signs: 💯×8, 👆×3.

Aug 9 · M116 Terence Anthony: “Chad's pitch is brilliant. TIL sulphur cools. This whole Hell thing is built on a lie! …”

Qualification. Joshua Bader: 'right now its a two note joke' (👆🏼). Carl Price likened it to usenet 'Ooky-Spooky Workplace pieces' and Chris Moore. Much of the response is laughter. His partner's comments weren't counted.

Comparison notes and remaining alternatives

Logan Raith, Fresno Nightcrawlers: homicidal walking pants (Aug 10). Ten readers and 'idea juice' wonder, but the Nightcrawler is real internet folklore (author message 80; Joshua Bader knew it); baptism premise praised yet confused readers by placement. Aug 10 · M77

Krislyn Lyon, Angels as alien, tech-equipped bureaucrats; Mary wasn't Gabriel's first choice (Aug 22). Six readers praised the heavenly bureaucracy and riffed on God's omniscience, but Good Omens (💯×3), LAMB, Supernatural and Gaiman comparisons frame it as a known comic mode. Aug 22 · M36

Randy M, Cyonics implants: a ruler who hijacks bodies and reads minds (Aug 25). Four to six readers intrigued (the host: 'Putting the battlefield IN his body is fantastic'), but no convergence on novelty; Neuromancer comparison; mid-serial chapter read cold. Aug 25 · M40

Each alternate is listed with the reason it fell outside the five. The five nominees above are not ranked among themselves; their slots follow session date, with the host always fifth.

STORY CATEGORY

😭 OOOF · Maximum Feels

A line, passage or scene readers reported actually feeling: grief, heartbreak, tenderness, fear for a character. The reported feeling is the evidence; general “so emotional” praise isn't.

SLOT 1 · AUGUST 13 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Chris Swallow

The Grimoire of Tanzil - Chapter One — The Memory Remains

Grandpa wakes and struggles to recognize him: 'Jonny-boy?'.

Five readers pin Grandpa waking and failing to recognize Jonathon. Eris Index: 'That absolutely sucks… A lot of us know that feeling'; Lisa N Snowe: 'awkward, and anxious… nostalgic and beautiful'; Gonz Paoli: 'Ouch!' on the lead-in line. 💯×2 on the host's pick.

Aug 13 · M90 BD Allen: “Favorite Scene: Despite anything I say next, the scene with grandpa was really good and had …”

Qualification. The card is a single quoted word; the full sentence isn't quoted. Gonz Paoli's 'Ouch!' is on the preceding beat. Session-wide grief ('overwhelmed', 'gut-punch') isn't pinned to this moment. Card wording: a single quoted word; the story's page blocks automated checks, so confirm it by hand.

SLOT 2 · AUGUST 21 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Bekjon

An Ordinary Day

The bullet line: 'I could always do that tomorrow.'.

Seven readers: six pin the line, one its callback ('Apparently that tomorrow had nearly arrived'). Reports: 'audible sound' (The Galactic Writer), 'really got me…literally' (Brian Fahey), 'got me in the feelz' (Eris Index, 💯×5). 🥹×2 on Megan Marrow's quote.

That I come home cheerful after an evening walk, holding myself back from putting a bullet through my head. Naturally, I omitted the part about the bullet. I could always do that tomorrow.
Exact wording as quoted in Aug 21 · M104
Evidence and qualification

Aug 21 · M69 The Galactic Writer: “Clearly, the character is depressed, and I did make an audible sound while making dinner when …”

Aug 21 · M82 Brian Fahey: “Also the bullet part really got me…literally. I removed something similar from a piece I wrote …”

Aug 21 · M46 Megan Marrow: “That I come home cheerful after an evening walk, holding myself back from putting a bullet …”

Aug 21 · M63 B.E. Lunetois: “My favorite line, because obviously the last person you want to talk about your suicidal ideations …”

Qualification. The host and Megan Marrow read it partly as dark humor (author: 'Perhaps dark humor'). Eris Index's report is on the callback line; Megan Marrow's 'worried/scared' (message 52) may mean this beat, unconfirmed. The line is about a character's suicidal thoughts; consider how it reads on a celebratory card. Card wording: as quoted by readers; not yet checked against the published story.

SLOT 3 · AUGUST 25 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Randy M

Those Who Knew Earth: Revolution, Part 5

Sun sends grandson Vanya out the airlock as bait.

Eight readers pin the airlock sequence. Four report fear or heartache: Lisa N Snowe 'palms started to sweat, for real', Eris Index 'wildly uncomfortable', fictionshroom 'That hurt my heart', Bekjon 'chills down the spine'. 💯×5, this×3 on fictionshroom's bait-line quote.

The child would slip or lose his grip, would fall, and be lost for nothing and face a last few moments of terror as the vestige of Earth sped away from him at incomprehensible speed.
Exact wording as quoted in Aug 25 · M34
Evidence and qualification

Aug 25 · M34 Lisa N Snowe: “face a last few moments of terror as the vestige of Earth sped away from him …”

Aug 25 · M58 Eris Index: “The entire time Vanya was climbing outside, I was uncomfortable because Sun clearly knows he could …”

Aug 25 · M96 fictionshroom: “That hurt my heart”

Aug 25 · M111 Bekjon: “‘Can you live with yourself if the last thing he hears is your voice accepting his …”

Aug 25 · M44 steffie: “I loved the visual here. The baggy suit…just awwww.”

Qualification. Readers pin different beats of the sequence, not one line; four of five who quote the bait line react with surprise. Eris Index and BD Allen say backstory exposition slows the climb. Card wording: as quoted by readers; not yet checked against the published story.

SLOT 4 · AUGUST 27 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Hammond (The Faraday Room)

Qualification. Responses mix hurt with satirical horror ('awful', 'Da fuk', 'WRONGESS'), overlapping NOPE. Card wording differs: 'rest of this week' (Lisa N Snowe) vs 'rest of the week' (Eris Index). Card wording: readers differ on “the rest of this week” vs. “the rest of the week”; check the published story.

The Triune Deer

Xereli's burial-like send-off for the slain buck Bravery.

Six readers pin the scene where Xereli tends Bravery's body. Five report grief: 'still breaks my heart' (fictionshroom), 'made the ending hurt' (Eris Index), 'made me feel for the deer' (Carl Price), 'feels' (Lisa N Snowe, the host). 💯×5 across three messages.

He gathered Bravery’s pelt and brushed off the dirt. He placed it back on the buck’s shoulders like an attendant dressing his liege.

Aug 29 · M112 David T. Etheredge (host): “This is a line that gets the feels going.”

Qualification. Several readers say the slow early sections delay reaching the scene. B.E. Lunetois's follow-up line ('Bravery, my liege…') is his own tribute, not story text. Card wording: ✓ matches the published story.

Comparison notes and remaining alternatives

Rune Knight, Red's death (Aug 15). Two readers report strong feeling ('had to stop to mourn her'; 'shocked… angry right along with him', 💯4 🥺), but no one else pins it and no line is quoted. Aug 15 · M90

Kiyoka Oda, Nobu's broken leg: vigil, apology, healing (Aug 20). Five readers pin the Nobu sequence; two report feeling: the host ('heartbreaking', 'this hurt me', 🥹) and steffie ('about to rage quit', jokingly). Others describe wonder or craft. Aug 20 · M49

David T. Etheredge, Antonio's grandfather speech: 'remembered for having lived' (Aug 30). Eight readers pin the speech or its closing line, but two report feeling it (Carl Price 'hit someone hard', Randy M 'hit well'); luther's and amanda's reports aren't pinned; partner excluded. Aug 30 · M96

Each alternate is listed with the reason it fell outside the five. The five nominees above are not ranked among themselves; their slots follow session date, with the host always fifth.

SLOT 1 · AUGUST 04 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

The Galactic Writer

The Zacora Mutation - Chapter 1: Nightmare on Phyllus II

Palmer's pus memory and the crew's flesh peeling away.

Eight readers pin Palmer's pus memory or the flesh-peeling footage. Five quote the pus passage; Carl Price: 'threatens to turn my stomach' (🤮×2); Eris Index: 'a bit nauseous'; Gonz Paoli: 'GROSS!'; fictionshroom's quote carries 🤮×3.

The memory of a pungent, sickly sweet smell of infected wounds invaded his nostrils, and he attempted to shake off the vision from his first surgical rotation, but it was no use. He saw it in his mind again—the knife releasing a sour hiss of trapped gas that bubbled up buttery-yellow pus from pockets of liquefying muscle.

Aug 4 · M141 Gonz Paoli: “GROSS! I love it! 😝”

Qualification. Vesper L. Rayne found the ripped-apart description 'a bit much' and suggested keeping two details; the 🤮 on message 42 may partly answer Carl Price's own crushed-nuts aside. Card wording: as quoted by readers; not yet checked against the published story.

SLOT 2 · AUGUST 13 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Chris Swallow

The Grimoire of Tanzil - Chapter One — The Memory Remains

Grandpa's episode: screams at nothing, collapses, eyes gone black.

Five readers pin Grandpa's episode. Vesper L. Rayne: 'That’s scary as hell'; Eris Index names 'demon-mode–black eyes'; Carl Price: 'ooky-spooky shit'; Kostia Dmytriiev picks 'Grandpa collapsing'; Kris quotes Jonathon 'wishing he could look away'. Few co-signs (❤️×3 on two picks).

Evidence and qualification

Aug 13 · M140 Vesper L. Rayne: “Once this frail old man suddenly shoots upright, starts screaming at something Jonathon can’t see, collapses …”

Aug 13 · M49 Carl Price: “this closes right when you realize you're not in for a 'Let's deal with Grief' piece …”

Aug 13 · M72 Kostia Dmytriiev: “Grandpa collapsing and Tanzil reveal.”

Aug 13 · M80 Kris (via Joshua Bader's account): “Jonathon’s entire body shook, unable to catch a single full breath, as he sat glued to …”

Qualification. No reader quoted the black-eyes lines and the story's page blocks automated reading, so the card passage has to come from the story or the author. Jacob Seinemeier found the supernatural turn 'too abrupt' and Gonz Paoli felt 'a break in reality'.

SLOT 3 · AUGUST 14 · NOMINEE, NOT WINNER

Jacob Seinemeier

Unhuman Resources- Part 1 of 3

Hoshino's third eye never leaves his face as she reads.

Qualification. Reception is largely comic delight ('trippy', 'supernatural ridiculousness'); Logan Raith says the piece is 'not trying to creep me out'; Lisa N Snowe's 'dread' covers the whole Hoshino exchange. Card wording: as quoted by readers; not yet checked against the published story.

Those Who Knew Earth: Revolution, Part 5

Vanya's climb outside the ship; the imagined fall as it speeds away.

Five readers pin Vanya's climb outside the ship. Lisa N Snowe quotes the imagined fall: 'My palms started to sweat, for real'; Eris Index: 'uncomfortable' throughout the climb (👍×2), 'wildly uncomfortable'; Bekjon: 'chills down the spine' at a related line.

Qualification. Card wording differs: 'this week' (Lisa N Snowe) vs 'the week' (Eris Index). Reactions mix laughter and 'Ooof'; the dread is conceptual (monetized affection); two readers found hair-brushing an unconvincing teen activity. Card wording: readers differ on “the rest of this week” vs. “the rest of the week”; check the published story.

Comparison notes and remaining alternatives

Joshua Bader, Danners' urge to put the .38 to his own temple (Aug 8). Eight readers pin the passage, but mostly as a character beat; only the host ('uhm...yikes? … woke me the fuck up') and Josi Sofer ('a mind-fuck of a scary time') register dread. Aug 8 · M64

Logan Raith, Eerie amber-lit church and chowder-thick dark on the snowbound trek (Aug 10). Two vivid dread reports on separate images—Lisa N Snowe 'pulls covers up to her chin' at the church (💯×3), Eris Index finds the chowder dark 'Creepy AF'—with no convergence on one image. Aug 10 · M37

Lisa N Snowe, Michael's grabbing, quietly controlling courtship of Jane (Aug 11). Six readers recoil ('gave me the ick', 'uneasy as fuck', 'creeped out', 'Eesh. Nope.'), but at a character's manipulation, not an image; no passage draws convergence. Aug 11 · M68

Each alternate is listed with the reason it fell outside the five. The five nominees above are not ranked among themselves; their slots follow session date, with the host always fifth.

Not beautiful. Lovely. Before that stupid song, ‘lovely’ was, well, lovely. Now it sounds like someone patting me on the head like a frickin’ cocker spaniel. And pretty? That’s how you describe someone’s 16-year-old niece. That’s not the word you use for the girlfriend of rock royalty.
