[8/6/2026 7:02 PM] starcryst @Joshua Bader GO! [8/6/2026 7:02 PM] .revanarchy Favorite Line / Scene: His eyes welled up. He stopped seeing Goldie as a pawn and saw her as a fellow traveller. Someone who had learned the lesson he couldn’t keep hold of. He took her hand. “I am so sorry. I am deeply embarrassed by my behaviour. I needed that reminder.” {Reactions} 🔥 ❤️ [8/6/2026 7:03 PM] .revanarchy I have to preface my criticism by saying in the end I loved it. {Reactions} 🫶 (2) 🔥 💯 [8/6/2026 7:03 PM] .revanarchy Criticism: You had 100% lost me before the ending. I did not connect with the story, disliked the way you write around what show he was in with that “wink at the camera” style. I just wasn't in to it. I wasn't sure why I should care about the MC or why this actor was special… and then you made me tear up in the last three paragraphs or so. I'm glad I stuck with it, but if it hadn't been for Write Club I might never have made it that far. I think the first paragraph is especially weak. Forget about the weather. We're here for Goldie, not the humidity. Convince me that she matters, that she's an interesting human (and she is, you just don't show me that till much later) in your opening and I think this story improves 200%. That's the easy fix. The other possibility is that you've grabbed the wrong POV for the story you want to tell. I think the story you want to tell is about your unnamed “Billy Shitner”. I suspect if you rewrote the whole thing from his POV something much richer and deeper might emerge. Because the story is at it's best when we reach his redemption… so maybe let us start in the muck with him so we can really treasure his transformation? {Reactions} ❤️ (3) 👍 [8/6/2026 7:03 PM] .revanarchy Done [8/6/2026 7:04 PM] starcryst @Eris Index GO! [8/6/2026 7:04 PM] erisindex Favorite lines: “In her restaurant!” Love the excitement in this tiny sentence. The sentence earlier about her having no motivation, and then this sentence after, gave me a full-image reel of her being blah one second and then through the roof the next. {Reactions} 🫶 [8/6/2026 7:05 PM] modhob Thank you, that would be a great experiment to take that perspective {Reactions} ❤️ [8/6/2026 7:05 PM] erisindex “I have been waiting for over 2 minutes for service,” he corrected Amy. S.o.b. walking. I cannot stand people like this. This sentence does a wonderful job of showing us this person's character. Apparently, this person is a ham-head. And again, the imagery. “Which reminded her of why she was so glad she had given up meat.” Why can I see this poor girl’s face turning green, about to vomit from staring at a forehead? Perfect. {Reactions} 🤣 (3) [8/6/2026 7:05 PM] erisindex Favorite scenes: She could still see the scene’s lighting, hues of red creating a cruel, hellish desert landscape. The Captain, staggering in heavy eye makeup as if he’d walked for days, panted into the camera: “Why? Why did we need to spread ourselves across the galaxy? Why could we not just be happy with what we have? Why is it never enough?” I really enjoyed this imagery, and I felt like it was a way to connect readers to the ham-head. Def my favorite scene. {Reactions} ❤️ (2) [8/6/2026 7:06 PM] erisindex Criticism: He assumed it was genuine because in a moment, she realized his head looked a lot like ham. This sentence jumbled me. I understand that ‘it’ refers to Amy’s smile, but the logic gets crossed between the two characters’ perspectives. He assumes her smile is genuine, but the sentence then gives her reason for smiling as the explanation for his assumption. I think if you separate those two thoughts, the ham joke will land a lot cleaner, as it should. {Reactions} 👍 (2) [8/6/2026 7:06 PM] erisindex And at the end, the emotional flip is almost instantaneous. Goldie asks him the line, and immediately we get something about cocaine addiction, the guru, tears, a hundred-dollar bill, some philosophical confession, and Goldie gaining her passion back. You put an entire character arc in a very small space. With no room for these things to breathe, I didn’t feel any emotion from either character; it fell flat. Giving this a little more room would make this part affect the reader more emotionally. {Reactions} 👍 [8/6/2026 7:06 PM] erisindex Overall, even with the ending, I really enjoyed this. It was short enough to dissect and have some fun with. I got a lot of emotion from the characters in the beginning and the middle. The ham-head joke is absolutely fire. I laughed aloud at that. I also liked the idea of “why is it never enough” being used to connect them, because it’s relatable to almost everyone in existence. Question: Which card ended up shaping the story the most for you, and did the “why is it never enough” theme come from one of the cards? DONE. {Reactions} 👍 [8/6/2026 7:07 PM] starcryst @Lisa N Snowe GO! [8/6/2026 7:07 PM] snowpuppie Ok first, I'm a dork. I didn't realize I wasn't logged in, so I didn't see the full story. HAHA! Anyway, so ... this is going to be a sort of "different" critique, but hopefully still helpful! [8/6/2026 7:07 PM] snowpuppie As a Communications professional, I'm going to critique this in part from that perspective, not *just* a writer's perspective. My goal: to provide feedback not just on this story, but the narrative for your product as a marketing piece. Which means I include all content on this page, not just the story. 🙂 {Reactions} 👍 (3) [8/6/2026 7:07 PM] starcryst I see we have 23 people in channel - raise your hand if you are ready to share feedback [8/6/2026 7:07 PM] snowpuppie Favorite Line (marketing): "I look at them as constraints that force relationships between ideas that probably would’ve never met otherwise... It feels like you’re proving that creativity isn’t about waiting for inspiration—it’s about recognizing patterns hiding inside apparent randomness." This line is essentially describing a benefit of using your product to your prospect audience. It's a little bit obtuse, but the kernel of your ultimate truth is in it (see critique for more). {Reactions} 🔥 👍 (3) [8/6/2026 7:08 PM] modhob Funny enough it was Sci Fi genre and I did not want to write a sci Fi story that day. I was thinking about how celebrities always disappointed me when I met them. {Reactions} 🔥 (2) [8/6/2026 7:08 PM] snowpuppie When Amy tells her about the "big deal": Well, he used to be a big deal with your generation… you know… like oldies. But this is totally good news. Right?” she hesitated as Goldie slowly composed herself. I could almost feel Amy's clueless stare as she uttered this unintended minor insult at Goldie. [8/6/2026 7:08 PM] snowpuppie (I only saw up to the first "ham" haha!) {Reactions} 👍 (2) 🤣 (2) [8/6/2026 7:09 PM] snowpuppie Critique (marketing): This is a structural marketing critique more than a story critique: Always lead any marketing or advertorial piece you write with the benefits your audience will experience using your product. Potential customers care most about what you can DO FOR THEM, and secondarily WHAT you are peddling. You need to hook them with that value proposition right up front. {Reactions} ❤️ (2) 👍 (3) 💯 (2) [8/6/2026 7:09 PM] snowpuppie That line I posted as my favorite? Get to the heart of that thought faster, and put it right up front at the very beginning of the page, so it's the first thing a person reads. Instead of "... that sparks imagination by providing a Plot Pattern to the author along with a handful of Story Element Card before the timer is set," which is all about the WHAT you're peddling, lead with something like, ".. that trains writers how to hone their ability to imagine and weave together entertaining, engaging plots and story elements, improving their writing skills and helping them craft stories to engage more fans." It's all about leading with your WIFM statement: "What's in it for me?" [8/6/2026 7:09 PM] snowpuppie Question: Why did you create Cards of Creation? And why did you choose this story? DONE! {Reactions} 👍 ❤️ [8/6/2026 7:09 PM] starcryst @Carl Price GO! [8/6/2026 7:09 PM] somedesertrat General Feedback: I would actually like to see how this would wind up shaped in the future. I understand that you had a writing-sprint length time constraint to work with, though, and you did manage to get some good beginnings of development for a scene and characters in the 15 minutes you had to write this piece. *(This is based on the links that were provided in the channel and announcement, and I'm seeing that others are providing feedback on lines/scenes that I didn't see in the link).* {Reactions} ❤️ (2) 🔥 [8/6/2026 7:10 PM] modhob Thank you 🙏 {Reactions} ❤️ (2) [8/6/2026 7:10 PM] somedesertrat Fave Line: "He assumed it was genuine because in a moment, she realized his head looked a lot like ham." This was just so out of the blue compared to others that I had to read it twice to make sure I was seeing what I saw... Then I was filled with immature giggles. {Reactions} ❤️ 🔥 (2) 🤣 [8/6/2026 7:10 PM] somedesertrat Constructive Criticism: There's really only one line that jumps out to me as needing any sort of adjustment and that's the 'smiled with her mouth' line. Anytime that I see that in someone's writing, I always question why they're specifically mentioning that instead of choosing a different way to describe the 'customer service' smile. {Reactions} 👍 (3) [8/6/2026 7:10 PM] somedesertrat DONE [8/6/2026 7:11 PM] modhob Fair point! Thank you {Reactions} 👍 [8/6/2026 7:11 PM] starcryst Okay I'm going to flip my feedback as well -- @Matt Gardner Can you share with us how the process went? The celebrity realizing he's been a jerk. I always loved getting those hundos when I was a barista. Brought back good memories. {Reactions} 🫶 (2) ❤️ [8/6/2026 7:22 PM] loganraith The rest of my feedback falls into the constructive category. I feel like I'm slouching into the Simon Cowell role here… {Reactions} 🤣 (4) [8/6/2026 7:23 PM] loganraith Though that was my favorite section, it was way too fast to be believable. He's awful and with one question, he's a reformed man handing out Benjamins. It may be a symptom of the story coming from a game, and having to cram a lot of beats into a small space, but it wasn't the only think that was rushed. The head-hopping, though it's an element of omniscient narration, runs at a break-neck speed. We're jumping from Goldie to Amy and back, then to the actor too fast. And when we switch to Amy, her dialogue has a break for no reason that makes the reader think Goldie's talking until we get to her talking the next line. Then someone asks who the guy is, and I cannot figure out who! I had several more, but I think most of my notes boil down to: This story feels incredibly rushed. Again, could be the game element. Sorry, Matt! I really try to be positive, but I think the most helpful thing for you here is to get the hard notes. DONE! {Reactions} 🔥 👍 (2) 🤣 🫶 [8/6/2026 7:23 PM] modhob Bring it [8/6/2026 7:24 PM] starcryst btw -- I think you should be selling this to every high school and college creative writing class in the world... I wonder if one of the issues is you have too many prompts (4?) in the first act which feels like you were forcing yourself to try and jam so much into 15 minutes that you didn't have time to focus on any of the 4 prompts. {Reactions} 🔥 👍 [8/6/2026 7:25 PM] modhob We had a teacher in Japan try it with 8 year olds and she said that it will change humanity {Reactions} ❤️ (4) [8/6/2026 7:26 PM] starcryst Anyone else have feedback?
