Starting with "I woke up in darkness…" sounds meta and delays the hook. I would much prefer her to just wake up in chains tied to the bedpost. That is a damn good hook. In my opinion, that first sentence is doing it damage. As soon as you started referencing New York, Kohl’s, Hot Topic, and especially Brad Pitt, I was pulled out of the story each time. The Brad Pitt reference was probably the most janky. The others could fly for paranormal romance, I guess. But Brad Pitt is a monstrosity of an icon. If you want your readers in your world, don’t give them Brad Pitt to think about, lol. {Reactions} ❤️ [8/7/2026 7:12 PM] erisindex Your main character does a lot of navel-gazing that should be fleshed out in the story, not just in her thoughts on the page. You tell us a lot about cancer, and I think the less you say about it, the harder it will hit the reader. Give us carefully placed details, and trust us to do the rest. A good example is the sentence from my favorite lines: “And I’d never had much tact before, so I could really enjoy it now.” Perfect. Her personality is a bit grating, to be honest. If the constant humor is meant to show cynicism or that joking is how she copes, I think we need to see actual emotion, the mask slipping; otherwise, it’s falling flat. One joking remark after another, and now I don’t care about her circumstances at all, because the story rarely lets her. I’m not sure that’s a good fit, because you obviously want the reader to feel something for the character by mentioning cancer, but your character's personality isn’t giving us any moments to actually feel that. I am agreeing with Eris on some of the references too. I WANTED to like the girl, but.. I couldn't really find it.. that hook that got me like.. Oh, i need to know her..
